Paving and pavements
The conservation department of Bristol City Council will frequently act following intervention from local amenity societies. Potential areas of concern may include:
- Cobbles — their preservation and re-laying with unobtrusive mortar.
- The preservation of unusual paving signage, coal hole covers, historic inspection covers, historic drain covers, iron protection of kerbs.
- Choice of materials to be used in the proposed reconstruction of the pavements. The subject of materials is a difficult one that prompts discussions throughout the city. The Council has to balance the competing priorities of complying with its Statutory duties and achieving a pleasant environment within its resourses.
- Where there are raised pavements (e.g. Royal York Crescent, Vyvyan Terrace, Victoria Square, Caledonia Place, West Mall, Bellevue) the residents are responsible for the repair themselves. Cellars are often underneath. Planning permission is required for listed properties.
- CHIS resists the removal of and damage to pennant flag stones.
