University of Bristol (UoB) Community Liaison Update

Dear CHIS Members, please find below an update from UoB regarding community liaison.

Dear community members,

As you may know, Steve Smith has now left the University of Bristol’s Community Liaison Office for a new security services role at UWE. It’s been a real pleasure to have worked closely with Steve and I know his role is valued by the community. I understand the departure may be a cause for concern, but please rest assured that the Community Liaison Office remains fully operational. As per our guidance, if an issue persists following an initial attempt at informal resolution, please report as you normally would, via community-living@bristol.ac.uk. Please also ensure you report any noise or waste issues to Bristol City Council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Team, who have the relevant legal enforcement powers. You may also choose to report an issue to the relevant landlord or letting agency, who have a legal duty to respond to anti-social behaviour in their property. I’m pleased to report that Operation Beech has now resumed following the summer break. If you’re disturbed by a house party or street noise caused by University of Bristol students between 8 pm and 2 am on a Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday, please text the street name and house number to +44 (0)7773 816 248. Police patrols will respond on a priority basis, and all incidents are followed up by this office. On days when Operation Beech is not running, you can continue to report noise and anti-social behaviour directly to the police by phoning 101. Elsewhere, recruitment for the new Community Liaison Officer went live early last week, with an application closing date of midnight on 8 October. We plan to involve community representatives in the appointment process. In the meantime, both the Vice-Chancellor’s Chief of Staff (Hannah) and Head of Public Affairs (Liam) will be working very closely with me over the coming weeks. This will include supporting direct student engagement and ensuring cases requiring formal disciplinary investigation conclude both swiftly and robustly. I’m also pleased to have additional support for investigations from highly experienced student services teams from across the University, and educational and engagement support from our central student communications team. Our five student ambassadors continue to add real value to our proactive engagement and educational work. If you see them at a pop-up trade stand over the next fortnight, do please stop by and say hello! Finally, I’m delighted to welcome Frank Chung back to the Community Liaison team from Monday. Frank supported our work for six months last year and will be a fantastic addition to bolster the team, working full-time over the next three months. Thank you to all those of you who have supported our community liaison efforts over recent weeks, either by distributing leaflets or simply saying hello to new and returning student neighbours. As I’ve said, the Office is very much ‘open for business’ and do please report any misconduct as you normally would. We will do our upmost to nip any issues in the bud as soon as possible. Thank you so much for your support. Phaedra Phaedra Karaoli Community Liaison Office
