Sadly, the Zoo's planning application for permission to cram the West Car Park with inappropriate residential development was granted by Bristol City Council's planning committee. Despite enormous public opposition, planning officers had recommended acceptance of the scheme. Some residents are concerned that proper procedure was not followed.
There are now fears that the main Zoo Gardens will suffer the same fate and become an unsightly housing estate, with the beautiful gardens and mature trees destroyed by building works and the installation of infrastructure.
In an attempt to prevent this happening, CHIS has succeeded in having the Zoo Gardens declared a community asset. (See our News item of September 9th 'Signal Success for CHIS'). We are supporting the OurWorld group in their plans to create a virtual zoo on the site.
To hear more about those innovative and exciting plans come to the CHIS talk on October 26th, given by George Ferguson. The talk will take place at the Apostle Room at Clifton Cathedral at 8pm. For further details click on Events. The talk is open to non-members. Anyone concerned for the future of our much loved Zoo Gardens should attend.
